Many people say you should have gas furnace cleaned once a year. However, modern furnaces operate in a fairly closed environment. If it works in a clean environment, you may have it cleaned every 2 or 3 years.

It's good to have it cleaned once a year or at least every 2 years. Even if it's in a clean environment, spiders can sometimes build webs within the furnance / pipes, and can thus effect how well your furnance runs.
