Are deadlifts a good exercise for strenghtening your lower back?

Are deadlifts a good exercise for strenghtening your lower back or do they mostly work the upper back and legs?

Yes, they can be, however most people perform deadlifts with bad form and end up hurting their lower back. If you deadlift with proper form and slowly build up in weight you can strength your lower back using this exercise. If you don't have any experience with deadlifting then avoid this exercise or get a strength coach to watch you deadlift, otherwise you're more likely to hurt yourself.
