Why does my golden retriever shed so much hair?

Is there any particular reason why my golden retriever sheds so much hair? Is there anything I can do to lessen it?

The reason that golden retrievers shed so much hair all year round is because they were bred for the purpose of working in water. This means that their undercoat was purposely thickened to be very woolly and dense so that they would be warm even in cold water temperatures. One way to control or lessen the shedding of hair would be to brush it regularly. Such dog brushes can be found in most pet stores.
