What is the best cat breed to buy for a first-time owner?

What breed of cat would be the easiest to take care of? What criteria should I look at in choosing a breed?

For a first-time owner, an American shorthair is highly recommended as they require zero to low maintenance on their coats, and they are quite personable and friendly. However, the answer to this question would depend on what exactly you are looking for. If you feel that you have enough time and resources on your hands to give certain breeds of cat the more extensive care they require, by all means purchase one. Bombays also make for very friendly, easygoing pets.
