Why doesn't Facebook allow more than 5000 friends?

Is there a reason why you can only have 5000 friends on Facebook? Is there a way to increase this number so you can have more than 5000 friends?

Facebook wants your friends to be actual people you know or have meet in real life, not just anybody who decides they are your "online" friend. That's why they set the friend limit to 5000. There has been rumors that they might remove or increase the 5,000 friend limit, but so far they have not done this across the board. That's why it's a good idea to only befriend people you actually know, or else you might run into a problem down the road with too many Facebook friends (who you really don't know).
