According to Mint.com, the average cost to own dogs ranges from $580 to $875 a year. This doesn’t include one-time costs such as shelter, licenses and vaccinations, nor does it take into account doggie Christmas stockings.

It's a good idea to set aside $1,000 to cover unexpected costs for your dog, that you may not have thought about.
