Between 3 to 6 months old would be a good time for the operation to be carried out before sexual maturity. Cats develop sexually at different times so it is your vet that will decide the best time for your cat. A general anesthetic is used in operations for both males and females. The male castration operation involves removal of the testicles and is a simpler operation that that of the female spays operation which involves removal of the ovaries and uterus and the stitches a week later depending on the stitches used. Let your cat sleep in a quiet place until they feel more like themselves after the operation. Have your cat wear a cone shaped collar for a few days so as not to nibble on their stitches. Keep an eye open for any signs of infection and don’t give them too much food.
