What is the meaning of Facebook sock puppets?

What is the meaning of sock puppets when talking about Facebook? It seems like people are says sock puppets (or fake profiles?) have been created to control the conversation on certain facebook pages.

Sock puppets are fake profiles indeed. These are used everywhere on the Internet, not only on Facebook. These profiles are created for deception. Many of the misleading profiles are created to support or defend something or somebody.
