In New York, when you buy or sell a car, a Retail Certificate of Sale ( Form MV-50) has to be filled in case of dealer transactions, or you have to sign over the Certificate of Title (MV-999) on the back in case of private transactions. It is recommended to obtain a bill of sale from the seller.

A bill of sale is required any where in the world for a car transaction. This is a legal process which is mandatory for both ten owner and the seller of the vehicle. It involves submitting the form MV 50 of motor vehicle (contact your local DMV for that) and other legal formalities. It is generally quick and the procedure generally takes a day.
