All about Facts

• has undergone repeated experimentation, reliable observation and has solid results
• are presented in courts to either convict a suspect or set him free
• may not always be accurate but they can be modified over time
• not based on someone’s thoughts alone
• non biased
• generally objective
• has evidences
• empirically the truth
• happened in real life and not in fictional stories

Examples:

• A person states that she is happy. {This is considered a fact because it’s true even though the statement is about a person’s feelings.)
• The physical differences of a man and a woman.

All about Opinions

• based on a person’s comprehension or feelings
• subjective and can be irrational at times
• a belief

Examples:

• Mary tells her friend that she looks sad. (Mary is just guessing her friend’s emotions based on her observation.)
• Men are greater than women.

Theory

• gives explanation to a certain phenomenon
• considered as a fact of science even if only one person has formulated it

Legal Opinion

• given by a judge to explain a certain rule or decision
• uses law principles, history and case facts to support the rule being implemented

Persuasive statements

• These statements are definitely opinions used to convince people to buy something or to join in a certain organization.

Philosophy often dictates whether a statement is the absolute truth or not. Epistemology is the specific branch of philosophy that is assigned to deal with this matter. It involves the study of the limits of an individual’s knowledge.

Amidst the never ending debate over true beliefs and objective facts, the bottom line is that knowledge can only be acquired by human beings if there are truths that are being set by the society.
