Originally Illuminati was a secret society founded in the 18th century in Germany. Its goals included fighting against superstition, prejudice, abuses of state power, and for gender equality and women's education. The society was outlawed within a short time.

It is alleged that the society had regrouped afterwards. Nowadays the term is used to refer to various organizations, both real and fictitious, and has gained a mysterious flavor. There are many rumors around it, such as it was responsible for the French Revolution, or it conspires to control world affairs. Thanks to its mysterious fame, the illuminati appears in numerous novels and movies.
