Why can't I connect iPhone to iTunes store?

I'm trying to download an app from the iTunes store onto my iPhone and I'm getting the following error message.

Cannont connect to the Store
A secure connection could not be established. Please check your Date & Time settings.

What's this mean and how can I get my iphone to work with the iTunes store?

OK, I figured it out. My iphone had the battery completely run out. So after plugging in my phone, and charging it, I then needed to go in and update the Date & Time manually to Today's date. Because the date was set to like Dec. 31, 1999 or something, it was causing a problem
