Where Can You Find the Tallest People in the World?

Statistically speaking, the country that has the tallest people in the world is the Netherlands. All male Dutch adults have an average height of 6 feet 1 inch or 1.85 meters. This is really a big difference compared to about a century ago when about a quarter of the male population who tried to join the military were turned down due to their short stature which was about 62 inches or 1.57 meters.

In Tanzania and Kenya, there are certain groups of tall people that can be found. One such group is the Maasai. Generally speaking, though, the tallest people are still found in the Netherlands. It has even been discovered that immigrants to this country are relatively taller than their average counterparts in the country from where they come from.

The next country with the tallest people is Denmark with an average of 6 feet or 1.83 meters. Surprisingly, Americans used to be the tallest people but currently males are only at an average height of 5 feet 9 inches or 1.76 meters.

Research has been made to identify the factors that can contribute to the towering height of the people of a country and it was mainly due to nutrition and genetics. Several centuries ago, the Dutch were one of the top in the list in terms of height. However, because of uneven economy, years of bad harvest and inappropriate nutrition, their height was severely affected. Genetically speaking, though, they could have earned the bragging rights as the tallest people if only they were able to meet their nutritional needs especially for children.

The researchers who confirmed that because the diet of Dutch children was comprised of dairy products that are high in protein and wealth distribution was fair and even, they were able to achieve the height that they have. This is in contrary to the US where there is poverty, malnutrition and immigrants who are short in height thus the shorter stature.

Being tall also has disadvantages. Recently, the Dutch had to modify their construction codes to ensure that doorframes are taller and that designs can accommodate very tall people better. For extremely tall people like those whose height is 7 feet or 2.13 meters, travelling in the average-sized cars can be uncomfortable thus cars are built to be more “height-friendly”.

Statistically, the Dutch are the tallest. But, obviously statisticians have never been to Montenegro. I can assure you Montenegrins are the tallest people I've ever seen in the world. And, I have been to The Netherlands, Germany, and many other countries around the world.

Well 7 years I am working for big company that hires thousands and thousands (tens of thousands!) people of different nationalities. I can tell that Dutch and Americans (white Americans, I am not talking of ethnic groups) are the tallest people all the time. Scandinavians traditionally taller people as well. Now, there are surprisingly tall people in less famous countries: Montenegro, Lithuania, Estonia and even Czechoslovakia!!!
