Product Description

The Smartwool community is a collection of people who believe that time outside is valuable, restorative, and essential for everyone. When Smartwool started making socks back in 1994, their founders simply wanted to be able to ski longer without getting cold toes. That’s when they discovered the benefits of Merino wool as a performance fabric. It was soft (softer than any wool they had every felt), moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm), sustainable, and odor-neutralizing- helping to keep feet dry, comfortable, and warm for longer than the synthetic socks they were wearing at the time. It worked so well, in fact, that Smartwool uses it in almost every single item they make.

Smartwool was the first outdoor company to make performance Merino wool ski socks- revolutionizing the category and forever changing the way outdoor enthusiasts viewed their feet.

Smartwool’s whole brand was built on the desire to be comfortable on outdoor adventures-we wanted to go farther and experience more. And that drive continues to fuel everything Smartwool does. From their Merino wool supply chain to the Smartwool advocacy program to how they design their socks and apparel, Smartwool exists to help you play, love, and laugh in the great outdoors as often as you would like.

i bought these as liners for cold days as well as hiking.

they were good for keeping my feet warm on overnight shifts i was working in a building without heating.

i also got to try them on a 6 day hike over summer. they seemed to work much better than both the polyester liners i've used in the past, and half polyester, half silk i had on the same trip. they keep my feet dry during rain, and dried off quick. i had no signs of blisters or overheating like i've accepted as inevitabilities on hikes. oh and they didn't stink after the trip. i look forward to using them exclusively on my next backpacking trip.

Hiked about 100 miles over 10 days and these worked great inside my wool socks. The black color is great at hiding how dirty they really are when you wear the same one for days.

I am often outdoors in cold weather for long stretches at a time (2-5 hrs). These socks are comfortable, soft and really make a difference in keeping feet warm when worn under another, thicker pair of socks.

I love the feel and fit (the XL size fit my 13's perfectly) of this liner sock, and used strictly as a liner it's good. However, I more often use liners at home with slippers so my feet don't get sweaty. I've used polypro liners for years because they are relatively inexpensive, but I love Smartwool brand socks so I decided to bite the bullet & splurge at ten bucks a pair. My rule using liners with slippers is wear 2 days, then wash. I wore 4x & washed twice; after the 5th wearing of the same pair, the heel was worn right through: BIG hole. This never happened so soon with polypro liners, and I don't think it should have happened with a $10 sock of ANY material.

Fortunately, I have another 3 pair (only 1 of which I used twice with my slippers), so I'll save those for use as liners under standard socks and hope they last a little longer. Smartwool makes good products but, in my book, this isn't one of them.

I have been using these liners for five years, I walk 5-10 miles on rough terrain every day for work. You MUST also use Smartwool outer socks with them. I have mixed liner and sock brands in the past and developed blisters. I might be cynical but I wouldn't put it past the manufacturers to design the socks INTENTIONALLY to not fit well with other brands. For example; the seem that goes over the top of your toes matches in both the liner and the sock with one brand, but does not match when you mix them, leading to uncomfortable friction. This is true amongst both the Smartwool brand AND the Wigwam brand.

Another note; the old liners had a little Smartwool guy at the back of the calf, the new version has stitching that spells "Smartwool" along the inside of the foot. This stitching can be felt on one's foot so some may find it less comfortable than the previous version that only has the little emblem on the calf.

Finally, when buying the liners, get the SMALLER of two sizes. For example, I got both a Large and an XLarge. I use the large liner with the XL sock. When it comes to the outer sock, Large is more comfortable but wears out in one season, the XL lasts two seasons but the extra loose fabric is less comfortable than the Large (I'm a seasonal employee).

These are the best socks in the world. They are absolutely perfect, warm in the winter, cool in the summer, they are exceptionally comfortable. Since I started wearing smartwool hiker socks I haven't wanted to wear any other sock. They are now the only socks I will ever buy. If a pair of socks can change your life these will. Buy them, be kind to yourself, especially your feet!
