Why does ice float to the top of liquid?

Why does ice float on the top of water, and not sink to the bottom? Is ice not as heavy as liquid water?

This is right, ice is not as heavy as liquid water. Water is different from most other substances.
It reaches its maximum density at 4°C /40°F.

Ice is about 9% less dense than liquid water, so a liter of ice weighs less than a liter water.
