What's the difference between AWD vs. 4WD?

In cars or trucks, what's the difference in All Wheel Drive (AWD) and Four Wheel Drive (4WD) 4x4? Is AWD and 4WD the same thing?

No they are a little bit different. AWD are generally all time 4wd vehicles which ‘sense’ power at each wheel independently.

Whereas in a 4wd, you have to manually shift to make the other two wheels get power too. A good example of AWD is the Toyota Fortuner whereas the Landcruiser has a manual 4WD. For more information on such autos, check out http://www.automotix.net/autorepair/askquestions.h...
