Probably the best current answer to the question "How many countries are there in the world?" would be 195 countries.

According to the Department of State as of July 29, 2009 there are total of 194 independent states. However, the US leaves off Taiwan due to political reasons.

The term "independent state" refers to a people politically organized into a sovereign state with a definite territory recognized as independent by the US.
